In-Home Family Education
The West Virginia In-Home Family Education programs (Healthy Families America, Maternal Infant Health Outreach Workers, and Parents As Teachers) are free and voluntary programs providing parenting education and support to families during pregnancy and until children are at least three to five years of age. These community and research-based programs build protective factors which enable families to deal more successfully with whatever challenges arise.
Parenting Education Programs occur in group settings and are used to reduce the risk factors and enhance the protective factors that are associated with Adverse Childhood Events.
Home Visitation Programs involve trained personnel visiting families in their homes to provide training, education, and support regarding prenatal and infant care and child development. Some studies have shown a 40% reduction in child maltreatment incidences when early home visitation is utilized.
The Sisters of St. Joseph Health and Wellness Foundation collaborates with Prevention in Community Outreach staff to provide funding for In-Home Parenting and Education programs related to prenatal, infant, and child development education.
Since 2012, the Sisters of St. Joseph Health and Wellness Foundation has provided funding to West Virginia In-Home Family Education Programs.
